All of the recycleables from neighborhood residents are collected in on-site centers such as this one. Kitchen waste is deposited in the dark drum on the left, where it is composted. At one time the low-income, immigrant residents of this neighborhood didn't know or care about recycling. Now recycling provides jobs for some of the residnets, and composting provides nutrients for their gardens. (photo by Steve McConnell, NBBJ)
