The SYSAV plant combines a number of different flue gas cleaning systems, including electrostatic precipitators, multi-stage wet scrubbers with waste water evaporation, fabric filters, and SCR. Because of the development of these more advanced technologies, between 1985 and 1999 most total emissions levels from waste incineration in Sweden declined by 95 to 99%, even though the amount of waste incinerated increased by 46%, and the corresponding energy production grew by 104%.
