The Oresund bridge (Øresundsbron), in the background, was inauguarated on July 1, 2000 to directly connect Sweden to Denmark. This opened up a direct link for the first time from Norway and Sweden to the mainland of continental Europe. It also reinforced the concept of Øresund as a transnational trade and metropolitan region consisting of the Copenhagen environs of Denmark and the Skane portion of southern Sweden.
