Real Estate Buzz: The Greening of 2200 Westlake

By MARC STILES

If you know where to find a dual-flush loo that looks classy, call Don Milliken. Milliken and other members of a Northwest delegation are back from a Scandinavian tour, the second this year organized by International Sustainable Solutions.

The tours inspired Milliken and partners Jim Mueller and Hamilton Hazlehurst of Vulcan Inc., to add a green roof and other eco-friendly features to their 2200 Westlake.

The mixed-use 2200 Westlake — retail, grocery, hotel, condos — is getting a green roof and, maybe, some dual-flush toilets.

Features like dual-flush toilets. "Most of the world has them," says Milliken, who explains they operate on the "if it's yellow, it's mellow" concept; users can set the dial for half or full flushes.

There will be a lot of flushing going on in 2200 Westlake's 261 condos and 160 hotel rooms. So the team looked for some dual-flushers but couldn't find a style that fit the project's luxury character. Now the search is back on.

The developers plan to spend an extra $70,000 to turn a 5,000-square-foot section of gravel roof into a green one.

"That is a direct result of being on the tour," said Milliken, who also is looking at boosting the number of bicycle stalls from 80 up to 150 and dedicating space in the parking garage for Flexcar.
